Democrats' problem with backbone

marjorie says...

In the spirit of Maggie’s post below on CAFTA, any bets on which Democrats will sell us down the river during the looming Supreme Court fight? Here are some of them:
  • Ben Nelson of Nebraska
  • Harry Reid of Nevada
  • Mary Landrieu of Louisiana
  • Ken Salazar of Colorado
  • Mark Pryor of Arkansas
  • Robert Byrd of West Virginia

It is indeed a tragedy that Sandra Day O’Connor announced she was retiring instead of Rehnquist. The retirement of a conservative wouldn’t have bothered me much, but the retirement of someone who is quite often the swing vote is quite serious for us all. And let’s face it, Rehnquist and John Paul Stevens (and maybe a few others) will most likely retire before the end of this Bush administration. We need to urge Democrats in the Senate to stand united for once in the face of the ultra-conservatives that Bush will surely nominate. We all know it’s going to be a big fight -- Bush and Co. are already playing the propaganda campaign with their talk of “fair” hearings and “fair” votes in the Senate. As if they’ve ever been fair about anything.
