Carlsbad principal perpetuates racial disparity

marjorie says...

I got this from SWOPblogger, where you can go to read an enlarged version. It's an actual letter sent to parents by Carlsbad Principal Ray Burrola on October 23. In it, he explains to parents that the high school did not make "Adequate Yearly Progress" under the No Child Left Behind Act because "Hispanic students, students with disabilities, and economic disadvantaged students" did not meet requirements for reading, attendance or math.

Who is this guy and why is he the principal of a high school? To me, the better way to phrase this would be "We are unable to meet the ridiculous requirements of the NCLB Act" or "We are failing our students" or, even better, "As these scores show, our educational system reflects the racist, classist, and ablist nature of the society we live in." But instead, he bluntly scapegoats, and feeds racist perspectives. With these types running our schools we'll never close the racial divide so prevalent on so many levels in this country.
